The IE 4
WWW Subscriptions Wizard
Part 2 - When the
checks/downloads are performed. The second part of
the Wizard controls how often IE
4 checks the subscribed site and
optionally downloads new content.
For users of dial-up Internet
connections, it includes the
option to have IE 4 dial-up
automatically at pre-determined
times of day. You can assign
multiple subscriptions to a
single dial-up schedule (i.e.
timed dial-up session), modify
the timings of the standard daily
schedule, and create multiple
custom schedules, for example
checking some sites daily and
others weekly.

This option is aimed
at users with permanent
connections to the Internet (e.g.
via a corporate LAN). If you have
such as connection, then you can
choose this option and the site
will be updated automatically
(for Channel sites,this can
include updates at times
specified by the site authors,
for example when news headlines
are updated). If you use this
option with a dial-up connection,
the subscribed site will only be
updated when you right-click on
it and choose Update Now
from the pop-up menu, or choose
Favorites..Subscriptions...Update
All from IE 4's menu bar. |
This is the option
the use if you have a dial-up
Internet connection and want IE 4
to dial in automatically to
search and download pages.
Choosing this option then
pressing Next > opens
this Wizard page (right) ,
offering the option to have the
site updated during your standard
scheduled daily dial-up session.
Note that if you want IE 4 to
dial up automatically, you must
have the 'Allow unattended
dial-up' option checked -
otherwise the downloads will only
occur if you happen to have your
dial-up link open at the
scheduled update time. The New and Edit
buttons let you create a new,
custom schedule, or edit the
details of the current schedule,
for example changing the time(s)
of day of the dial-up session, or
changing the number of days
between sessions. Using multiple
schedules (created with the New
option), you can have
subscription sites updated at
different frequencies, for
example updating news and share
price services twice a day, and a
weekly newsletter once a week.

This option,
suitable for direct and dial-in
connections, prevents IE 4 from
performing any automatic checks
or downloads from this site. To
perform a check/download, either
right-click on the subscription
in the Subscriptions folder (see
below), or Favorites folder (if
the site is also a Favorite), and
choose Update Now from the
pop-up menu. To update all your
subscriptions, choose Favorites..Subscriptions...Update
All from IE 4's menu bar. |
